Gilmer County, Georgia, located approximately 70 miles north of Atlanta and 65 miles southeast of Chattanooga in the Appalachian Mountains is both the Apple Capital and Mountain Bike Capital of Georgia. We are also at the start of the Appalachian Trail on Springer Mountain. Gilmer County is a great place to live, vacation or come on a short visit. With approximately 40% of our land area in national forest, state forest, federal wilderness area or wildlife management area Gilmer is an outstanding place for outdoor activities of all types. Lakes, rivers and trout streams are in abundance in Gilmer. Ellijay, our county seat, is a quaint small town with locally owned shops and restaurants. It is also (unofficially) the parade capital of Georgia. We dress up and parade down River Street at least once a quarter and sometimes twice! East Ellijay, our other incorporated city, is located along Georgia Highway 515 (the 4 lane to locals) and is host to chain restaurants and "big box" stores such as Lowes and Wal-Mart. So you see we have a bit of everything in Gilmer County!
